The Blank Cheque – Video Intelligence System

Getting your Video Intelligence System started on the wrong foot.

Too often we meet client’s who will define the Technical Requirements of a Video Intelligence System, off the bat. This is usually because the client has seen a hardware solution at a “good price”. It may also be that the customer has seen a feature which they consider “cool”.

These customers force fit solutions to their challenges – and it’s not always successful.

The order is wrong, and often results in an ineffective system. At times the client is paying for “cool” that they won’t ever use – for any meaningful return.

Operational Requirements

The Operational Requirements Document is the most important document to kick off a Video Intelligence System design. The ORD – as when you call in business process specialists, seeks to determine the “success” factor for each department or zone under surveillance.

Technical Requirements

The Technical Requirements follow on from the ORD, informed by the ORD and the physical environment.

Return On Investment

I am not sure that this is always due to price sensitivity, or grudge spending. Some client’s just don’t have the time to go through an operational requirements process – quite detailed if done properly.

Video Intelligence and Management Systems are like any other business investment. Business Owners or managers must take the time to properly define the outcomes before spending money on such systems.

Video Surveillance companies, have a set of methodologies and in-house business expertise to work through the process.

You know what you want – the technician knows how to give it to you.

Your technician shouldn’t be asking you where you want to place a camera.

The technician should be interested in what you want to achieve in a particular area.

The technician should be the one to lead you to your small copper fittings shelves – if it’s a hardware store, or the waste receptical area if it’s a restaurant, or point out the paper clips next to your till.

The technician would be the one to suggest you install microphones or microphone capable cameras at the Deli or other counters to manage sweethearting or claims.

Often the client has run through a basic ORD himself, and determined where he would like a camera. The technician is the one with the expertise regarding focal lengths, field of view and light processing – and is best able to determine the camera location based on the ORD and the physical environment.

The difference between profit and CCTV

The ultimate measure of success will be the return on investment as reflected on the bottom line. The ROI will be relative to how much energy the client gives the Operational Requirements process.
