Covid-19 and it’s derivatives are here to stay – at least for the foreseeable future.
For those of you with large numbers of people seeking access to your facilities, e.g. Universities, Technikons, Shopping Malls and Large Hyper Stores – you are obviously battling with resource allocation and congestion at access points. Congestion at this point – translates into limitations on your ability to carry out business as usual.
Body Temperature Cameras
I recently installed body temperature cameras at a technikon entrance – handling hundreds if not thousands of student flow daily – with some skepticism I must admit. 50% of covid infections don’t even present with a fever, after all!
I must admit though – I was pleased with the simplicity of the system. A high fever is an indication of something – and at the moment you don’t really want someone with a high fever – entering your property.
We do know though that the wearing of masks make a significant contribution in reducing the spread of airborne disease. The system we deployed is quite effective at flagging students not-wearing masks or not wearing them properly.
So this is a simple system, and it works. You cannot discard your hand-held though, since we do get false flags on the system, and the guards simply pull those students out the crowd and hand test them.
The rate of flow through the entrance though is greatly enhanced, and needs a lot less resources.
Let me at this point just highlight something about the hand-held units in use at the technikon. I discovered, as we pulled out individual students, that each unit was rendering a different result, and the difference was a whopping 5 degrees? Needless to say, a lot more attention is being given to calibration of those units now.
You know, when these body temperature cameras were initially highlighted, I faced a moral dilemma – given that popular brands where coming onto the market at R100,000 per camera? I made it my purpose to find something usable, The solution we deployed comes in at around 1/10th the price of these other brands.
Of course, I doubt the accuracy claims from all the manufacturers. A solid system though, that provides a benchmark and flags abnormalities consistently – is certainly of value.
Let’s engage and talk about how to reduce the resource needs and rate of flow into your premises. Free Flowing customers contribute to your business volume, and rate, and flagging elevated temperatures and improper mask deployment is of immeasurable value to your business continuity efforts.
