If you are looking for ways to improve the security of your property, you might be wondering whether a solid wall or a fence is a better option. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on your needs and preferences. In this blog post, we will compare the pros and cons of solid walls and fences for security purposes.
Solid walls are structures that are made of concrete, brick, stone or other materials. They can provide a high level of privacy and protection from intruders, noise and weather – provided that the material is not easily broken through. However, they also have some drawbacks, such as:
– They can be expensive and time-consuming to build and maintain
– They can reduce the curb appeal of your property
– They can attract graffiti and vandalism
– They can block natural light and ventilation
– They can be difficult to modify or remove if you want to change the layout of your property.
SOLID WALLS CAN ASSIST CRIMINALS
In our view solid walls are not desirable, since they can offer criminals some real advantages, such as;
* They can obstruct the visibility of the surroundings – both the interior and the exterior view. This can make it harder for the owners and the authorities to monitor the activities and movements of potential intruders or trespassers. Solid walls can also provide cover and concealment for criminals who want to hide from detection or escape from pursuit. For example, a burglar can use a solid wall to break into a property without being noticed by the neighbors or the security cameras. A kidnapper can use a solid wall to abduct a victim without being seen by the witnesses or the police.
* Another drawback of solid walls is that they can create a sense of isolation and detachment from the community. This can reduce the social cohesion and mutual support among the residents and the businesses in the area. Solid walls can also discourage the participation and engagement of the owners and the authorities in the prevention and deterrence of crime. For example, a solid wall can make it less likely for a neighbor to report a suspicious activity or a crime in progress. A solid wall can also make it more difficult for a police officer to patrol or respond to an emergency – since they have no view of the interior scene.
FENCING CAN USUALLY BE CLIMBED OR CUT THROUGH
Fences are structures that are made of wood, metal, vinyl or other materials that create a barrier around your property. They can provide a moderate level of privacy and protection from intruders, noise and weather. However, they also have some drawbacks, such as:
– They can be easily damaged or breached by cutting, climbing or digging
– They can require regular painting or staining to prevent rotting or rusting
– They can create gaps or holes that allow unwanted views or access to your property
– They can be affected by weather conditions such as wind, rain or snow
– They can be subject to local regulations or restrictions on height, style or color
MAKING THE CHOICE
As you can see, there is no definitive answer to whether a solid wall or a fence is better for security purposes. It depends on your budget, preferences and goals. You should consider the following factors before making a decision:
– The size and shape of your property
– The level of security and privacy you need
– The style and design of your property
– The climate and environment of your area
– The legal and ethical implications of your choice
You should also consult with a professional contractor or security expert who can advise you on the best option for your specific situation. Remember that security is not only about physical barriers, but also about other measures such as lighting, alarms, cameras and locks. A solid wall or a fence can enhance your security, but it cannot guarantee it.
OUR PREFERRED SOLUTION
At Gensix Technologies we ordinarily do not recommend solid walls that block the view of the property. Our preferred solution is a structure that is made of materials which are not easy to break through or to climb, and that provide visibility of the interior and the exterior of the property. We suggest re-inforcing the perimeter barrier with an electric fence that introduces further deterrent to a criminal. We rarely support the concept of wall top electric fencing, except where the construction material of the fence or wall cannot be broken through or damaged.
This type of fence is designed for high security. The material and 76mm aperture size make it very difficult to climb over, or cut through. The fence is re-inforced with an electrical fence as deterrent, and the fence is equipped with an intrusion alerting mechanism.
The perimeter fence, pedestrian and driveway gates are the first point of contact for criminals in 80% of cases. Effective security goes beyond the perimeter – but securing the perimeter effectively is the first line of defense.
